Attraction - Places to visit

Crete is the largest, the most popular of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean area. The capital and largest city of the island is Heraklion, which is the CAPITAL OF Crete including neighboring islands and islets. With a population of 620,000 inhabitants, about 160 km south of the Greek mainland and extending from west to east, bordering north by the Cretan and south of the Libyan Sea. Is considerede an important part of the economical and Greek cultural heritage. Though, Crete preserves its own cultural elements. In the years 3000 BC-1400 BC flourished on the island the Minoan civilization, one of Europe’s first civilisation, with main centres in Knossos, Cydonia and Phaistos.

In the western part of Crete is the prefecture of Hania with its gorges , caves, lakes and beaches ornaments. Important archaeological sites compose the scene that impresses every Greek and foreign visitor.

Chania is the capital of the county with many neighborhoods with picturesque …….. The modern city spread out around the old has good layout, open roads, beautiful squares and well-preserved neoclassical buildings.

Municipal Market

The Municipal Market, the huge building of 4,000 sq.m. on Hatzimichalis Giannari, it is one of the most modern monuments of the city of Chania. Built in 1913 on the bastion Piatta Forma, in the middle of the walls of the Venetian period. Until the late 19th century in the Municipal Market of Chania were roughly established butchers, fishmongers and vegetable shops, an outdoor street market, where the villagers brought their products to sell.

In 1908 the municipality decided to groom the party building the Chania Municipal Market ,. It has a cross shape and four gates, one on each wing. It houses 76 shops arranged in groups in the four arms of the cross.

The official inauguration of the Municipal Market of Chania made by the then Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos in 1913, shortly before the Battle of Crete in May 1941, was completed and the anti-aircraft shelter in the southeast part of the Municipal Market of Chania.

During the occupation the Municipal Market of Chania was used by the Germans for the needs of the occupying army.

Venetian Harbour

The Venetian harbor with the lighthouse is a hallmark of the city of Chania. Today attracts many visitors and the inhabitants, during the summer months. Many restaurants, taverns, cafes, bars along the beach are ideal for relaxing hours of leisure and entertainment.
Built by the Venetians from 1320 until 1356. Manufactured in Firka fort at the harbor entrance in the west and is enhanced by the Bastion of St. Nicholas of Molos on the breakwater. The Ottoman period the Venetian harbor, although constituted trade center, left to its fate. Only in the years of Egyptian occupation (1831-1841) starts again repair works and refurbished and the lighthouse.

The Tombs of the Venizelos

The Venizelos graves of Eleftherios Venizelos and Sophocles Venizelos, situated in an excellent location up on the hill of Prophet Elias, only 5 kilometers east of the city of Chania.

Ancient Aptera

The Aptera, which is approximately 15 km. From the city of Chania and above the Souda Bay, was the Minoan years one of the most important cities - states of Crete. Located in an extensive plateau with an altitude of 200 meters. with a stunning view to Souda Bay.

Knossos

The Minoan palace is the main site of Knossos, an important city in antiquity, with continuous life from the Neolithic period until the 5th century. A.D. It is built on the hill of Kefalas, with easy access to the sea and the island of Crete. According to tradition, it was the seat of the wise King Minos. Exciting myths of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur and of Daedalus and Icarus, connected with the palace of Knossos.

Archaeological Museum of Chania

The Archaeological Museum of Chania was founded in 1963 and is located on the spot where stood the old Venetian monastery of St. Francis in Halidon Street in the city of Chania. The museum’s collection includes finds from excavations in various parts of the city made during the last 50 years and its exhibits give an enduring image of the cultural history of Chania from the Neolithic period up to the Roman period.

Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection

Inside part of the northwest side of fortifications renamed Monastery of San Salvatore. This report is focused on the historical and artistic identity of Chania region during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period.

The exhibits are divided into sections according to their category (Mosaic, Signs, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, coins, etc.) and are arranged in chronological order, accompanied by information boards and maps.

Maritime Museum of Crete

The Maritime Museum of Crete is located in the Historic entrance fort ” Bastion ” in the old Venetian harbor. Established in 1973 to promote the maritime tradition and history of the island. The Museum cooperates and interacts with other maritime museums in Greece and abroad.

The permanent exhibition includes 2,500 artifacts as relics, objects found on the seabed, paintings, maps, photographs, ship models, nautical equipment etc.

An important development step for the Maritime Museum is the creation of a permanent exhibition of Ancient and Traditional Shipbuilding. The main exhibit is the restored ship of the Minoan era “Minoa”, an experimental model, a replica of an ancient trade. Other exhibits are tools and materials used in the construction of a series of photographs as well as an experimental trip map.

Holy Cathedral of the Virgin Mary

In the city center of Chania, dominates the historic Trimartiri the Holy Cathedral of Chania, the Church of the Presentation of Mary. Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagkarolon

The Patriarchal Monastery of the Holy Trinity Tzagarolon is one of the most important monasteries of the Venetian fee in Crete with rich offer in history and education of the island. Located at the foothills of the Cross, to “Tzompomylos” of Cape Meleha.

Gouverneto Monastery or Lady of the Angels

The Gouverneto Monastery or Lady of the Angels is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete and is a sign of the Orthodox monastic architecture. Built in 1537 at an altitude of 260 meters by monks of the monastery Catholic who left due to piracy.

After Gouverneto walking trail through the gorge Avlaki, a beautiful wild scenery will look after about 30 minutes driving the ruined Catholic Convent or Monastery of St. John the Hermit. The monastery of Panagia Chrisoskalitissas

THE MONASTERY OF MARY OF CHRYSOSKALITISSAS. It is built on a rock, with spectacular views of the sea. Tradition says that the ninety stairs leading to the top of the rock is a golden, but can not be seen by the sinners. It is not known exactly when it was founded the current monastery. It is believed that the position existed priory. The two-aisled church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and Saint Triada.
It is approximately 75 km from Chania and just five miles from Elafonisi.

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is located in Chania Mountains White Mountains. It has a length of 18 km and is the longest gorge in Crete and Europe (in length). It has a width from 150 meters to 3 meters, which is the narrowest part of the name “Doors”. In 1962 it was declared as a national park of Greecevand a place of residence of many endemic birds and different species. The most famous of the animals that find refuge in the Samaria Gorge is the Cretan goat (Kri Kri). There are also growing rare herbs and plants such as wild burning bush and wild flowers. The gorge got its name from the village of Samaria and though it owes its name to the Byzantine church of Blessed Mary of the 14th century, located there and survives until now with many pictures and murals.

Useful information for visitors

To get to the Gorge you can take the shuttle bus fro Chania;s Bus station which is located approximately 700 meters from the hotel, which takes you to the entrance of the gorge called Xyloskalo

The route starts very early in the morning 06: 15-07: 45-08: 45 and ticket price 7.50 / person.

Also you can go with an organized tour: Ticket price for bus and Guide 22,00 / person + 17,00 about for the entrance and the boat. (input value 5.00)

For hiking in the Samaria gorge you must be properly dressed in light colored clothes, hard shoes (boots), have been provided light fare, Water does not need to have with you, since the entire length of the gorge there are sources of clean drinking water. Also in many places there are toilets. The distance is 14 km and the walk lasts approximately 4-8 hours, depending on the pace. The most common time duration is six hours. Arriving At the ends in St. Roumeli which is 2 km from the exit of the gorge you can make a delicious swim in the clear blue waters of the Libyan sea and enjoy the delicious and traditional tavernas.

About Kourtaliotis Gorge

Kourtaliotiko Gorge is located in Rethymnon area about 22 km south of the city. It starts from the village Koxare follows the river and ends in Kourtaliotis Lake beautiful beach Preveli. Halfway through your journey you will meet the road that passes through the gorge with parking and paths leading to the beautiful church of St. Nicholas. Towards the end of the gorge there is a point that resembles a tropical lagoon and has been named the beach with the Phoenicians! The gorge has incredible beauty and the scenery is wild. It has a rich flora and fauna and the river is divided into five streams which unite and form small lakes and a huge waterfall! Throughout the route you will notice that the canyon is narrow and the rocks are huge and full of small caves and ruler. Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a miracle of nature! Really worth a walk and see the beauty and wildness of the Cretan landscape!

Agia Irini Gorge

The gorge of Agia Irini is the second most visited gorge in Chania, after the Samaria Gorge. It is 7 km long and will take about 2.5 hours to cross it from the top of (Agia Irini) and descend to Sougia.

It is part of the E4 and is very easy route. They are downhill without particularly steep areas, with visible trail and almost entirely shaded. The only hard part is at the end of the gorge, after leaving to walk about 5.5 kilometers to the road to get to Sougia. There is a cafe where you can relax and if you want to avoid walking on asphalt call a taxi from Sougia., To take you either in your car or in Sougia (cost about 20,00).

Although the canyon is considered easy and suitable to even cross children should not forget to use appropriate shoes.

If you want to visit the gorge starting from Chania, the solution again is the public bus that starts 05.00 in the morning. Around 06.00 you will arrive at the entrance of the gorge and around 09.00 to Sougia … exceptions are Sundays, which starts 07.30 from Chania.

You can enjoy the sea and spend the day until the afternoon by bus again (about 18.15) will return to Chania. On Sundays you can use to return the bus that leaves from Sougia 12.00!

The Gorge of Imbros

The grand canyon of Imbros in Sfakia is one of the deepest and narrowest gorge of Kreta . The gorge starts just south of the village Imbros plateau Askifou to reach after about 5 km in village Komitades near Fragkokastello beach.

These walls stand vertically at a height of 300 meters and its width in places not exceed 2 meters. The crossing is relatively easy, it can be done all year round - with attention from autumn until the spring - and takes about three hours hiking up to Komitades.

Marathi - Loutraki

The beach Marathi located 17 km east of Chania, in Akrotiri. It is one of the beaches of Chania awarded with the Blue Flag. The sandy beach in conjunction with the shallow water and protection from the wind - due to the location - make it ideal for families and children. The beach is well organized offering guests the possibility to enjoy Cretan food and drink and facilities for swimming (umbrellas, shower, etc.) and lifeguard services. About 75 km. West of Chania, on the western coast of Crete.
One of the most popular destinations of Crete, Falasarna is a series of sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. From the city of Chania is regular daily bus service to Falasarna.

Balos

Regarding Balos, the main feature is the well-known but incredibly beautiful beach, wide with fine sand, white and red, which at one point forming a small lagoon.

Seitan Limania

The beach !
Situated Seitan Ports, on the northeast side of the Akrotiri peninsula in western Crete, 20 km from the city of Chania, there is a beach different from all others.
Stretches of water penetrating between the steep cliffs of Cape creating small bays. In one of them is the well hidden beach.

The location is known as Seitan Ports. The word Seitan is Turkish, apparently left by the Turkish occupation of Crete, and is translated as impish. Therefore the Seitan Ports translated as Diavololimana.

However, the beach at Port Seitan shows more heavenly than devilish. Admire color sea!

Access to Port Seitan:
To go to Port Seitan will follow the road to the airport of Chania. After turning on the airport will continue to Chordaki village 2. At the village entrance, turn right and before the road climb to the top of Mount Skloka 3 will continue again right to the church of St. Raphael.

After the chapel of San Rafael, the road continues strongly downwards by successive hairpins and takes you above the beach, where you can park.

Pedestrians will walk down the path that leads to the beautiful beach Seitan Ports.

Elafonissi

The southwestern tip of Crete.
The farthest beach from Chania town, but worth the way you do to get there. It is an islet almost connected with a coast and is only 100 meters. from it and one can reach by walking into the sea. Elafonisi is 76 km. From Chania and 43 from Kastelli. Here one comes to admire the stunning sandy beaches with dunes and white sand and swim in the unique in Crete crystal waters. Although the natural beauty attracts plenty of visitors the site has no developed tourist infrastructure. Elafonisi is one of the most popular beaches of Crete.

To get here from Chania there are two routes. Both equally graphic and suggested.

If you are coming from Chania and return to Chania, I would suggest you to go on one route and return from another.

If you follow the first one, which is the shortest, turn left about 1 km before Kissamos (maybe less) and follow the signs to the gorge of Topolia and then to Elafonisi.

To follow the second route will pass through Kissamos to Trahilos, the junction to Falasarna (another of the most popular beaches of Chania), will continue through the village of Platanos and then follow the signs.

Theriso - Kerameia

From Chania take the road to the junction of Kladissos - through Kissamos Street - and follow the signs for Theriso.
